Situated on the river that flows between the Mediterranean sea and the Köygeğiz lake and surrounded by mountains, this popular resort sits in a conservation area made famous several years ago by David Bellamy.

Dr Bellamy and a team of conservationists managed to prevent the development of a tourist site at Iztuzu beach, where the giant loggerhead turtles lay their eggs each spring. Consequently the beach has remained in it’s natural state and the scenery around this unspoilt spot is quite stunning.

The town itself has a vibrant centre with many bars and restaurants lining the streets and a pretty harbour, where the boats line up to take you on a lazy journey past the rock tombs to the beach, to the mudbaths or to the lake at Köygeğiz.

A rowing boat ride across the river and a short walk will take you to the ancient ruins of Kaunos. With only ten percent of the city currently exposed, and more treasures are being discovered every year, this is arguably one of the most important ancient sites in Turkey.

Originally founded in the 9th century BC, it became an important Carian city in 400BC and bordering the kingdom of Lycia reflected aspects of both kingdoms in it’s culture. Originally a coastal harbour, it’s importance declined with the silting up of the river and the site now stands 5kms inland.
